55+ Beautiful Hand-Poked Tattoos and Ideas For Men and Women

Known for its unique look, stick and poke tattoos are an ancient form of body art. Find inspiration with these simple and complex ideas.

A dot or intricate piece can be created in this manner, but they are typically thought of as basic, minimal designs. Despite their appearance, stick-and-poke tattoos have the advantage of having a more intimate, primitive feel.

Electric tattoos come to mind when we think of tattooing, but stick and poke tattoos are also fantastic options. Their creation involves the use of a needle and ink. You may have seen them trending recently on social media or seen people opting to make them themselves.

Despite its popularity now, stick and poke is an ancient form of body art with its own unique look.

Alternatively, you might like it because you don’t like mainstream tattoos; it has a rebellious association, once being inked by punks and underground hipsters. Perhaps you would like a design that is a little more unique?

How Long Does It Last?

Stick-and-pokes are frequently misunderstood as not lasting as long as machine-done tattoos; however, that’s not entirely true. When your stick-and-poke fades or just deteriorates in quality, it is probably due to inexperience and/or improper procedures used by the person you went to.

Tiny Stick and Poke Tattoos

It’s a great idea to try out tiny stick and poke tattoos before committing to a larger piece. You can get small tattoos anywhere, and they are easy to hide if you need to. The great thing about small tattoos is that they are extremely versatile. It will take longer to ink a small piece on an electric machine than it will on a stick and poke approach, so the smaller you make the piece, the faster you’ll be able to ink it.

What are hand-poked tattoos?

Ink that has been hand-poked is pretty much what you’d expect from its name. At Femme Fatale Studio in London, Grace Neutral creates epic hand-poked tattoos without electricity. Back in the day, that’s how they tattooed.

To apply the ink, a single needle is used instead of an electrically-powered machine (aka a tattoo gun). A slower tattooing technique, yes, but one that results in extremely delicate designs.

As a teenager, Neutral began working in tattoo shops and fell in love with it. I couldn’t go back after trying it. There was no doubt in my mind that this was the path I wanted to follow.

Are hand-poked tattoos more painful than normal tattoos?

It is unsurprising that a tattoo gun’s loud buzz and look can deter people, which is one advantage hand-poked tattoos have. The experience is generally less uncomfortable because the process is a lot calmer and quieter.

Neutral says that while everyone’s pain threshold is different, from what she’s seen, most people say it’s less painful than a machine tattoo, from her experience.

How long do hand-poked tattoos last?

It’s more likely that you’ve seen some faded stick-and-poke tattoos than the technique itself that are responsible for their longevity. It’s certain that hand-poke tattoos done well will last forever, just as machine tattoos do, according to Neutral.

What aftercare do you need for hand-poked tattoos?

Any tattoo needs aftercare (you’re putting ink into your skin! ), so keep your new tattoo moisturized with a fragrance-free, hydrating lotion, such as Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion, and avoid immersing it in water. There will be no sun, no sea, and definitely no dodgy tattoos while you are on vacation.

Do Stick and Poke Tattoos Hurt?

Stick-and-poke tattoos are generally not considered as painful as machine tattoos because they use needles. Due to their less invasive nature, they are less painful. Additionally, they may heal faster but take longer to complete. Although, the amount of discomfort you will experience is largely determined by your pain tolerance and the location where you choose to get tattooed.

What to Do if You Have Stick and Poke Tattoo Infection

People who perform DIY stick and poke tattoos are at a greater risk of contracting an infection because bacteria can enter the skin without proper, sterilized equipment. You should take the appropriate measures if you have an infection from your tattoo. It should be kept clean at all times with a thin layer of petroleum jelly and a nonstick bandage that should be changed on a regular basis.
